As a resident for thirty years
in this village, I feel that police
partnership means listening to
the citizens and not assuming
the worst. Experience shows that
some police officers assume that
citizens concerns of the major
crimes such as rape, robbery and
that of burglary. After listening
and talking with citizens that
live in the community, it turns
out that their main concerns were
the quality of life issues, such
as abandoned vehicles, abandoned
houses, loud music and rowdy youngsters.
The positive aspects of community
policing and citizen partnership
is to improve neighborhood stability,
have better community relations
and satisfaction with the police,
reduce fear of crime, reduce crime
rates in certain types of crimes
and a decrease in sale and use
of illicit drugs. I feel most
important is to have a better
attitude mainly between police
and citizenry, and the willingness
to work together cooperatively.
This police department must review
its role as serving the citizens
of this community to the best
of our abilities. We also recognize
that we do not only represent
this department, but as professionals,
we represent the law enforcement
profession and government. We
as police officers, in this village
personify law, and its noted
that our conduct, both on and
off duty should be beyond reproach.
As a police officer my commitment
is that we are public service
employees and do have an obligation
to the public. Any actions, practices
or attitudes that contribute unnecessarily
to the community tensions and
grievances will be reviewed for
changes if necessary. As Chief
of Police, my officers and I will
work together to strengthen our
community relations with the citizens
of this village. It is with this
acknowledgement that we as a department,
work together toward accomplishing
that objective.
