EMERGENCY RESPONSE DATA

In 2003 the University Park Fire Department responded to 1439 calls for service. Of these, 834 were calls for Emergency Medical Care, and the remaining 605 were for fires or other related incidents. (click here for graph)

Since the Department’s inception, calls for service have steadily increased. From 1972-1979, the Department experienced a 570% increase in the number of responses. This increase continued into the 1980’s which showed a 21% increase and into the 1990’s with a 99% increase in responses. Currently, the calls are on a 19% increase since 2000 and based upon projections, the Department is anticipated to respond to over 1500 calls for service in 2004. (click here for graph)

Based upon data from 2003, the Fire Department’s busiest day is Thursday followed by Wednesday and then the remaining days of the week. (click here for graph) The busiest time of day for emergency responses is between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (click here for graph)

While the calls for service have steadily increased, the Fire Department continues in reducing their response times. Currently in 2004, the Department is answering 16.4% of calls within 2 minutes, 20.6% of calls within 3 minutes, and 17.1% of calls within 4 minutes of receiving the alarm with an average response time of 3 minutes and 50 seconds (click here for chart). This means that the Fire Department is answering 66.7% of all calls within the 4 minute time-frame recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1710).
